The shirt you never wear

Everyone has one – that piece in your wardrobe that you bought because it looked so good in the fitting room but somehow, it ends up hanging in your closet untouched forever. I bought the shirt in these photos before moving to Florida. It looked great when I tried it on in the store, then it got packed up in a box, shipped to Florida, and hung in my closet for a good 4 months without wear.

For me, this top was hard to wear because 1) it’s very sheer, 2) there’s not a whole lot in my wardrobe that looks good with neon yellow, and 3) it’s a flowy top that hides my curves instead of working with them.

Saturday rolled around and I needed to throw something together to wear for date night. The destination was Olive Garden thanks to a free gift card John got at work, and afterwards we planned to see Ted. I wanted something simple but still polished, so I turned to my favorite red skirt. Something made me grab for the neon yellow top and suddenly I’d finally outfitted the impossible top!

My advice for outfitting your stubborn piece? Try pairing it with something unexpected that you would never consider. I never would have thought to put these two pieces together, but I figured I’d give it a try and was pleasantly surprised with the result.

What is hanging in your closet untouched? What’s your method for outfitting the impossible?

I know just what you mean about stubborn pieces in the closet, and I think your suggestion of pairing them with something unexpected is spot-on. I LOVE these colors together – so bright and sunny – and the yellow stripes are adorable!

Ohhh I just love this combo. I really like how the red and yellow look together. I definitely have some stubborn pieces that frustrate me when I see them… I will need to re-try mixing them with unexpected items 🙂

I hope it works for you! This shirt is definitely not my only stubborn piece…in fact some days I wake up and look in my closet and feel like I have nothing to wear. Thanks for the sweet comment!

I love this combo! The colors are so fun! I take the easy route when I can’t figure out how to make a piece work. If it’s a top I throw it on with denim or khaki bottoms. If it is a bottom, I throw on a black or white top. I think I’ll get better results if I try your more daring approach though! 🙂

Thank you so much! I love the colors too, perfect for summer even though it’s slowly coming to an end 🙁 I use the same method as you sometimes, I pair difficult pieces with neutrals, but trying to pair them with something random/unexpected is a great method too if you want to create a bolder look.

I have SO MANY of those pieces. Usually I over paid for them too so I can’t bring myself to get rid of them, but never wear them. I can’t believe that you don’t wear this one. I LOVE this outfit. Great styling.

Haha, I know how that goes! I have some other pieces in my closet too that I have yet to wear so I’m hoping this outfit will give me a little inspiration to try and outfit those pieces as well. I can’t believe it took me so long to wear this top either! Thanks for reading/commenting. 🙂

Well thank you very much! 🙂 I’m sure everyone can relate to this problem…especially the days when you stare at a closet full of clothes and exclaim you have nothing to wear, right??

Thank you so much Yi-chia! I’m sad it took me so long..I loved it so much in the store but struggled with it when I got it home. I’m glad I’ve finally brushed the dust off of it and given it another chance.

I have a super sheer Loft top that hasn’t seen the light of day, either, even though I love it! It’s probably because “the light of day” is the problem 🙂 I love this pairing of brights – it’s so happy and fresh but somehow both pieces feel like they’ve never not been paired together. Loving it!

Well you should give it a shot soon!! Thanks for the compliment too, I was surprised when I wore it a lot of people asked me if it was a dress…it was positive reassurance that the pieces look good together after all! 🙂

I have so many dresses that I haven’t gotten around to wearing. Either they came and didn’t fit (eek!) or I just can’t figure out how/where to wear them. I also do this bad thing: sometimes, I buy pieces that I love SO SO MUCH that I can’t bring myself to rip the tags off and wear them. I know that sound absolutely crazy (which it is) but I can’t help it! Side note: you look great!

Actually, it’s not all that crazy. When I buy new things I have a habit of not taking the tags off and just letting them hang in my closet until eventual wear. I don’t know why, but I like the idea of totally new things with price tags attached hanging in my closet. 🙂

I think those two pieces work really well together, great combo!

I have a habit of shopping and buying each piece for itself and not really considering how it goes with the rest of my wardrobe, so I totally have those individual items that look great but I’m not sure what it goes with. I don’t know why this has been news to me, but I’ve starting grabbing one piece – top or skirt – and just putting it up against all my other pieces – skirt or top – and have come up with great combos I would have never thought of.

I do the same thing sometimes, I get so hung up on something in the store then I get it home and realize I have nothing that matches! I like your method too, that is another great one to try!

Oh yes, I definitely know what you mean about that stubborn piece. I’ve had plenty. I actually have a lot of pieces that I don’t wear until months later because I just can’t figure out how to wear it. Then, out of nowhere, it comes to me. Haha!

I love this look! I think you styled it perfectly. Great top and I love the colors that you paired up with this look. It’s so bright and summery. Just perfect. 🙂 Great look again!

Thank you so much for checking out my blog Heather! I enjoyed the combo as well too, I’m actually pretty proud to report that I’ve broken the no-wear spell with this shirt and have come up with many more things to pair it with. 🙂

Thanks, Jessica! It’s a great skirt, definitely one of the more versatile pieces in my wardrobe as opposed to this striped top. I’m glad I found a way to wear it, too 🙂

I have far too many items that fit in this category! But lately I’ve been selling them at Buffalo Exchange and trying to be a bit more choosy of what I buy. In your case though, I think the top looks fantastic with the skirt! Great color blocking outfit 🙂

I always try to tell myself the same thing, but it doesn’t always work, I just love shopping too much 🙂 I sell a lot to Plato’s Closet when I need a good wardrobe purge so at least I get some money back in the end. Thanks for the compliment!

I do that all the time. Buy something that sits in the closet for way too long. I bought a silk skirt for a wedding 8 years ago, wore it once and never touched it again. I felt bad it always sat there but never knew what to wear it with and couldn’t bare getting rid of it cause it was so nice, and I FINALLY wore it to work a couple weeks ago. I was so excited. haha

I know the feeling (obviously)! Now that I outfitted this shirt once though, I seem to have broken the spell and thought of a handful of new outfits I can make with it 🙂

Thank you Rachel! And yes, it’s definitely an easy way to create new outfits and also a great way to remix pieces in your wardrobe instead of buying something new.
