Peplum Perfect (and a note about dressing for your body)

As usual, I’m a million steps behind everyone else in terms of trends, and peplum is no exception. I remember a brief encounter I once had with peplum in a cramped Forever 21 dressing room in which I ultimately decided the trend was not for me. Of course, all of you fantastic bloggers out there were begging me to reconsider with all your amazing photos of peplum tops/skirts/dresses and I decided to give it another shot. Man, oh man, am I glad I did that!

Look-I’m a curvy girl. I’m not an Amazon woman by any means (I’m 5’4” ish) and I have a pretty short torso. I’ve learned to embrace my body, because it’s unique and its mine and I love it, but shopping can also be incredibly frustrating for a size 8 girl in a size 0 world. I see so many trends that cater only to stick skinny girls (here’s looking at you, crop tops) who have legs for days, and it’s frustrating because I’m not that girl.

Top: ModCloth (runs a full size small if you’re busty) | Jeans: American Eagle (similar) | Shoes: Nine West (similar) | Necklace: F21

This frustration led me to believe there were a lot of trends I couldn’t partake in, like maxi skirts and dresses, and even peplum. I figured it’d hit me in the wrong spot and people might think I have a bun in the oven. Lucky for me, I was so so so so wrong. Peplum works wonders. If you’ve got a square, boyish figure, shazam! you suddenly have curves. If you’re a curvy girl, you suddenly have the world’s smallest waist.

I got this peplum top from ModCloth and I love how it hits me at the smallest part of my waist and works with my curves to create a great shape. I don’t think anyone will be surprised when I say I’d like to add a whole lotta peplum into my step (that was good, right?) from now on.

What’s your favorite peplum piece? How are you styling it?

PS- Happy Friday. Have any fun plans this weekend? I’ll be at the beach until Tuesday with John and my family, so expect to be bombarded with beach pics next week. 😀

i LOVE this peplum top on you, stephanie! OH MY GOSH IT’S seriously so gorgeous. it just got added to my august wishlist because i love it that much. i, like you, have a lot of issues with clothes. i am short, 5’3″ish, and curvy… i’m a size 10-12… so i know the pain of shopping for trends when you don’t have a “trend” friendly body. i have learned to let go of sizing up and realize that clothes are made differently!

Molly, thank you thank you! I’ve learned to let go of sizes too, if a size large looks good on me and flatters my body, then who cares, I’ll but the large! I’m glad you can relate here, and you’ve got it all figured out because you always look fab girl!

The stripes really look fabulous on you, I love the way the designer used them. Think you are frustrated with styles? Designers and buyers have completely forgotten my age category :o(. Have a great time with your folks and sister! I’ll be thinking about all of you and looking forward to the beach pics. Gma

Looks fab! I agree, it fits you really well and is very flattering. Also festive for US pride on the kick-off of the Olympics! Just need some blue too! 😉

🙂 Maybe you can get a blue necklace! Hey, want to do a blogroll swap? I’d love to add you to mine and if you could return the favor it’d be rad. Also check out the new look of my site. Yay!

Thank you, that really means a lot! I still have my days where I stare at my closet and can’t find a thing that I think looks good, but everyone has those regardless of size. Thanks for the sweet comment. 🙂

Trust me, I’m not that girl either. It’s hard finding trends that work for your body–and sometimes you just don’t! For example, no matter how much I love them, I will NEVER wear leather pants. Not cute on me. I love this peplum top on your–it’s fantastic! I have yet to find the perfect one for me but I’m going to keep looking because I could see how it would be a really flattering cute–I want in!

Agreed – there is nothing worse than going “therapy shopping” and still finding nothing. I think i feel the same about leather, I see so many cute leather shorts/pants/skirts but I think I’d look totally crazy if I tried it. Don’t give up on finding a peplum – the key is finding one that hits you in the right place. ModCloth has some great options!

So so true. They give you shape if you don’t have curves but compliment curves if you do have them! I’m definitely glad I gave it another shot too. Thanks for reading/commenting!

So true, it can be hard at first, especially when you go shopping and can’t find a thing, but I’ve learned what works for me. I’ve also learned what won’t work and have to embrace that. And you are definitely right, it’s not just curvy girls who have a hard time finding clothes! 🙂

Now I know what a peplum is! And even though I have birthed 4 children, I can wear one without looking like I have a bun in the oven because all you skinny young girls are doing it too 🙂
Actually I have a couple that I really really love.
    You look great Stephanie!

Thanks girl! I’m dabbling in print mixing…but I’m not very daring with it yet so I figured I’d start with shoes 🙂 Glad you like my outlook, they way I see it there’s no point in having a bad one, I just have to search a little harder than most for styles that really suit my body is all!

Peplum is definitely a trend that anyone can rock. Cinching in the waist is always a great way to emphasize that hourglass figure. 🙂
