20 before 25: #1 Go on a Cruise

Our welcome sign to Nassau, The Bahamas

When I first started writing this post, I was going to give a play by play of everything John and I did while on our cruise to the Bahamas, but after mulling it over for a bit I decided it’d be way more fun to list out what made me enjoy this mini getaway so much. I’m also super excited to have crossed #1 off my 20 before 25 list!

Making our way into the port in Nassau

Our cruise ship docked in Nassau

Being around someone you have fun with no matter what. One of the things I love most about being with John is that I have just as much fun snorkeling in a coral reef with him as I do sitting at home in our PJs watching TV. He makes everything so fun and is such a joy to be around. The cruise was no exception! Sure we both had to deal with sea sickness and we missed the fancy dinner and didn’t get to sport our new outfits, but we made the most of our vacation. We also focused on the most important thing: having fun and enjoying each other’s company.

Trying new things. Neither John or I had ever snorkeled before and I kind of started to panic inside when the time actually came to do it. I was terrified of seeing a shark, swallowing salt water, or having a hard time breathing through the snorkel tube. I found myself stalling when it was time to get in the water until John finally just got up and started walking down the stairs, forcing me to follow. Once I got in the water it was so fun doing something new and exciting that I’d never done before. I stuck my face in the water and was greeted by a school of tropical fish. I managed to swallow some salt water but hey, it made things a little more exciting and I washed the taste out with some delicious rum punch afterwards.

The importance of a little R&R. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life so a cruise was the perfect getaway. Focusing on nothing besides drinking, eating and relaxing really gave my body the recharge it needed. It also made it incredibly hard to go back to work on Tuesday!

Staying positive. The seas were rough during our whole cruise which unfortunately led to the captain canceling our second day in the Bahamas. We were looking forward to a lazy day on the beach at Royal Caribbean’s private island but instead ended up with a day at sea. It would have been easy to whine and complain and be angry, but instead John and I headed for the pool and relaxed together determined to enjoy the day anyway. We got to watch a belly flop contest, drink out of a pineapple, listen to a great Calypso band and see a pre dinner show, all things we probably wouldn’t have gotten to experience otherwise.

Relaxing by the pool during our unplanned day at sea

Drinking out of a pineapple (there were a few refills…)

Food (and drink). There was never a shortage of either on the boat! There was also an ice cream machine (which we visited daily) and the buffet food was great. When we got to the Bahamas we tried conch fritters and for some reason thought we could drink these gigantic tropical drinks without getting too drunk for dinner. We were totally wrong (and poor John took a drunken fall in the bathroom resulting in a seriously bruised nose). Being surrounded by so much food and drink on a daily basis was definitely a dream come true.

Our vacation definitely had its challenges (like my sea sickness and John’s bathroom fall) but I wouldn’t have had it any other way – okay I would have taken John’s injury out of the mix! It was great to spend quality time with John and to unplug from life for a few days. PS – the fact that these pictures are up here is a miracle. I accidentally sent our point and shoot camera through the dryer after the cruise (which we used to take most of the pictures you see here) and it got totally fried. Lucky for us, the SD card remained intact and our pictures lived to tell the tale! Also, a huge thanks to the ladies who helped out with vacation week last week!

What are your favorite things about vacation?

How fun! The sun, water, food and drink sounds like my kind of vacation. I am afraid to take a cruise because I get sea sick! We went snorkeling in the Florida Keys and that was the best vacation I have ever been on. Heather

Haha those are all things my vacations usually consist of! I was so surprised I got sea sick because my dad is an avid fisherman and I have been out on really small boats in rough lake/ocean conditions before and never been bothered. Dramamine worked wonders for me and they also make small patches you can wear behind your ear to prevent it. I’d love to snorkel again!

You guys are basically the most adorable couple ever. I’m glad you had such a great time. Poor John… cocktails + rough seas are a bad combo! I definitely would have gotten a few “souvenir” bruises, too. My favorite thing about cruising in the past is that they are so effortless. They eliminate so much of the planning, and you’re practically guaranteed a good time!

Thank you! I know, his lip STILL hurts…I feel awful. But honestly, we should have known better than to combine huge alcoholic beverages with big waves. And I totally agree, it was so nice to just get on the boat and not have to worry about a thing. We had all of our excursions pre-reserved also so that made things even more relaxing. I’ll definitely cruise again but next time I’ll make sure to have some meds on hand!

That bathing suit is so pretty and tropical! These photos are making my rainy day a little less dreary- I’ll just pretend I went on the cruise with you! It sounds like you had a nice time minus the small setbacks (something crappy always seems to happen on vacations!)

Thanks Rachel! It’s my favorite bathing suit (if you couldn’t tell by the fact I am wearing it in almost every picture). And I totally agree, in my opinion it isn’t truly a vacation without at least one little mishap. I guess it keeps things interesting 🙂

Oh you are way too nice! I’m actually surprised I didn’t gain 20 lbs. I ate pizza and ice cream and inhaled beverages the entire time we were gone….it’s amazing John didn’t have to roll me off the ship! 😉

Beautiful photos Stephanie! I’m so glad you guys made the most of your trip! I’m obsessed with the water so when we snorkelled in Maui it didn’t bother me, my husband on the other hand had a little more trouble and managed to swallow quite a bit of water which gave me a scare as I know he’s not the strongest swimmer. I’m so glad it was worth it and you got to see a ton of tropical fish! Love the depth of field in the shot of your first drink on the island and your bathing suit couldn’t have been prettier!

Thanks Jen! I wish I’d taken more with my nice camera but I have to admit I was a little worried about carrying it around unattended during our snorkeling trip and around the pool on the ship (which is where we spent most of our time). I guess that just means I have to go back! John definitely swallowed his share of sea water too (and his entire snorkel tube fell off at one point and was lost at sea) but we eventually both got the hang of it.

Thank you Kristina! I had never heard of conch fritters but they were absolutely amazing. I could have eaten another plate of them 🙂 I’m glad the island wasn’t much to miss but I still would have loved a relaxing day on the beach.

Thank you so much, how sweet! I’m so glad we were able to get away for a few days too. We have been SO busy (especially with our new four legged family member) so it was nice to get away and just spend quality time together. And I totally agree, I feel so lucky to have John in my life 🙂

Aww I am so sorry your camera is broken but at least the pictures made it out okay!! I love this post–the pictures are wonderful (SO JEALOUS of your trip!), the food & drinks look amazing, and it sounds like you guys created some wonderful life time memories! I need to start writing my 30 before 30 (I’m less than a month before my 25th birthday) so I can start knocking things off my list! Glad you were able to get away and have such a nice trip! 🙂

Haha it’s ok, it was just our little point and shoot so it can be easily replaced. I’m super glad the pics survived too! You should totally write a 30 before 30, I’d love to see what you put on your list and follow along as you check things off. Happy very early birthday! 🙂

Thank you so much, Maya! And yes, pretty bummed about the camera but we’ll be able to easily replace it (plus I’m sure John will love getting to work scouring ebay for the best deals). Looks like you need a vacation next! 🙂

OK you two are literally the most gorgeous/fun couple I have ever seen…I completely wish I was on the cruise with you, it seems like you had such an amazing time! There are always unforeseen mishaps on vacations (some of my biggest disasters have happened on them!), but they make for such great stories afterwards. I hope John’s nose is healing! By the way, you look like a BABE in that bikini! xo

Oh stop it! We definitely had an amazing time and I agree, something bad always happens on vacation no matter what. And relaying the whole drunken fall in the bathroom story was pretty funny. John’s nose is better but now we’re working on the fat lip hahaha!

I love this post! I am so happy that you had an amazing time on your first cruise, and that your SD card lived to show all the pictures of your vacation. The first time I ever went snorkling, I had the exact same nervousness. I am so glad you had a blast, going on vacation with someone you can truly have fun no matter what you are doing is always the best. I cannot wait to go on my next cruise with all the food and drinks!!

Thanks girl! I cannot believe the pictures survived, but I’m so thankful 🙂 It’s also good to know I wasn’t the only one nervous to snorkel. Hope you get to go on another cruise soon! Next time I’ll definitely prepare with meds to avoid sea sickness so I can enjoy the food and drink even more!
